For Competitors

Competitor Questions

Registration is open now. Visit the registration form and fill out the competitor registration. Registration closes 15 September 2026. Spots are first-come, first-served among the 32 available places.
All competitors use the same coffee, same machine, and same grinder provided by WEC. You cannot bring your own equipment. This ensures the competition tests pure barista skill, not equipment advantage. The only thing that differs is you.
WEC uses ISO 5495 paired comparison methodology. Three sensory judges conduct blind tastings of two espressos at a time, choosing which is superior. This continues in a single-elimination bracket until one champion remains. All scores are published immediately.
WEC is always looking for experienced sensory professionals to join our blind judging panel. Judges must be trained in ISO 5495 paired comparison methodology and have a background in coffee sensory analysis. To apply, fill out the judge registration form at https://forms.gle/5FT1zCymSnaQ8NgG8. All applications are reviewed by our head judge panel.
Volunteers are the backbone of every WEC championship. Roles include event coordination, equipment setup, competitor liaison, registration, hospitality, and photography. No prior competition experience is required — just enthusiasm and reliability. To register your interest, fill out the volunteer form at https://forms.gle/5NpeCVgPY1RsbX2BA.
The World Espresso Champion receives the Champion's Coffee Product — a career-defining commercial deal where their winning recipe becomes a globally distributed product bearing their name, with 5-10% royalties on every bag sold. This is unprecedented in competitive coffee: a lifetime revenue stream, not a one-time payout. They also join an exclusive community of past champions with ongoing recognition and benefits.
