Tristan Creswick

Founder of the World Espresso Championship

Tristan Creswick created the World Espresso Championship with a simple but revolutionary idea: that espresso competitions should be about what's in the cup, not the theatre around it. Under his leadership, WEC has grown from a small proof-of-concept in Melbourne to a global movement reshaping competitive coffee.

"I started WEC because I believed the world's best barista deserved to be crowned through blind, objective judging — not stage presence. Every champion we've crowned proved that when you remove the spectacle, the truth rises to the top."

The Beginning

The World Espresso Championship was born from a frustration with the status quo. Tristan had watched barista competitions become more about storytelling and stagecraft than the quality of the espresso itself. He believed there was a better way — a format where only the liquid in the cup mattered.

Drawing on ISO 5495 Sensory Analysis methodology, Tristan designed a paired-comparison, blind judging format that eliminates every variable except the barista's skill. Same coffee. Same machine. Same water. Only the barista differs. The result is the most objective espresso competition ever created.

In 2022, the first WEC took place in Brisbane with 19 competitors. It was a proof-of-concept — small, intimate, and powerful. It proved the format worked. From there, WEC has doubled in size every year — expanding to Athens, Busan, Milan, and now Panama City for the landmark 2026 championship.

Tristan's Vision for WEC

The principles that guide every decision about the World Espresso Championship.

Blind Judging

Judges never know whose espresso they're tasting. No bias, no favouritism, no politics. Just the coffee. This is the foundation of WEC's credibility.

Objective Scoring

ISO 5495 paired comparison methodology provides statistical confidence in every result. The winner is determined by mathematics, not opinions.

Commercial Opportunity

Through the Champion's Coffee Product, winners don't just get trophies — they get careers. Every champion deserves to profit from their excellence.

Global Community

WEC exists to bring the world's coffee community together, not to divide it. Every competitor, judge, volunteer, and spectator is part of something larger.
